Skater Requirements

Equipment

All skaters are required to have quad skates, knee pads, elbow pads, wrist guards, a helmet and a mouth guard. It is most important to buy good quality kneepads that are designed for derby or other high impact sports as well as good fitting helmet. Other items that will come in handy are an athletic/gear bag, a socket wrench/skate tool, duct tape, toe guards, extra laces, extra wheel nuts, and a durable water bottle.

We do have loaner gear available for new skaters to use until they are ready to make the financial commitment to purchase their own gear.

League Dues

Monthly league dues are $30 during our active season. During our summer and winter breaks paying dues and attending practice is optional as we are focusing on fundamentals and new skater training. There is a 30 day grace period for dues for new members.

WFTDA Insurance

Skaters are required to purchase insurance from WFTDA after an initial 30 day grace period, at a cost of $75 per year (https://wftda.org/insurance/purchase). Skaters are STRONGLY encouraged to have primary care insurance. New skaters do not need WFTDA insurance until they pass level one of minimum skills and are cleared for contact drills.

Volunteering

Since our league is run entirely by volunteers, skaters are also required to attend fundraisers and events. You will need to attend 2 events per quarter. Volunteer credits can also be earned through the Safeway card fundraiser or purchased for $30. All skaters participating in home games will need to perform one bout day task as well.

Practice

Sessions are once a week, at The Club For Boys in Rapid City. Check Facebook for updates on day and time.

New skaters will attend our fresh meat training program. WFTDA insurance is not required until you pass the first level of minimum skills and are are ready for contact. Gear is available to use until you are willing to commit to purchase of your own gear and there is a 30 day grace period for payment of dues. New skaters will also be expected to learn the rules of the game. We will go over rules at practice and there will be opportunities to ask questions. The rules of flat track roller derby can be found here: https://rules.wftda.com/index.html

Bouting skaters are expected to maintain AT LEAST 50% practice attendance during our active season. We take a break in the summer and winter at which point practice is optional. 75% attendance 30 days prior to a game is needed to guarantee a roster spot. If you are not able to make 75% attendance your position on the roster will be at the discretion of the training committee. Please communicate with them if you will be missing a substantial amount of practice.

Bring a black and white shirt to practice, we will scrimmage as long as there is enough people.

You will need to create an account to fill out membership paperwork and sign documents. If you have any questions at all please don’t hesitate to ask. We hope to see you at practice soon!
